And Terry’s choice to wear the only remaining halo is emblematic of her own sense of piety, which continues to manifest as judgement and controlling behaviour, and jealousy of anyone else occupying Arabella’s attention. While Kwame is absolutely right about the homophobia and racism of the girl he slept with, he isn’t fully wrestling with how what he did in revealing he was gay after having sex with her was a violation of consent, and he can hear how hollow his mumblings of ‘she basically forced me’ sound. Similarly, as she walks down a street reeling off problems caused by the gender data gap (she’s clearly read Caroline Criado Perez’s Invisible Women), she’s identifying real issues in the world, at the expense of ignoring the pain of her friends and the damage she is causing to herself. She’s not wrong about the problems of the generalisation, but it means that she doesn’t hear the warning he is giving her about her blood pressure. What’s devastating about the script is the blurriness of good and bad, of healthy and unhealthy behaviours – a point made brilliantly in the opening sequence as Arabella first interrupts a doctor’s appointment to show off her CT scans to her social media following, then refuses to listen to the doctor’s advice because he uses the (NHS-approved) description of ‘Afro Caribbean’ in relation to her. When Terry tries to confront Arabella about her own hypocrisies – including trapping Kwame at her party in a room with a strange man while Kwame was vulnerable – she refuses to accept any wrongdoing, offering a chilling performance as she asks Kwame to tell her exactly what she did wrong, and taking his silence as evidence of him pretending to be a victim. Arabella – who has become a hub on social media for people exposing their rape victims – is appalled at the idea that he slept with a woman ‘under false pretenses’ and cuts Kwame dead. During a Halloween self-care Paint and Wine session (something Arabella describes as a ‘movement’ to her social media following, while doing far more recording of herself than actual painting), Kwame reveals the story of what happened in the previous episode with the white girl he slept with.
